BA (Double Hons), MA (Psych), MaPPi, ANZMH, Accredited EMDR Practitioner
Extensive experience enables me to offer focused and effective individualised psychological care for you, whether your focus is on yourself, or your relationships with others, home, work, community or traumatic “experiences from the past” which are still impacting your wellbeing.
My philosophy is simple: working within a solid grounding in academic training and scientifically researched best practice models of care, I listen and focus on effectively engaging with you to understand and identify your situation. Within a collaborative framework I provide support and guidance to help you clarify, heal, understand and integrate.
I work with both individuals and couples, and am experienced in assisting people from the teenage years through to the elderly. I treat a number of diagnosed and often un-diagnosed conditions within the mental health landscape, and provide a neutral ground for integration on an individual level which you can then radiate out into impacting productively on other areas of your life.
Could Counselling Help?
I find working with individuals dealing with business stressors, organisational change, challenges, or navigating new roles to be very rewarding. Often the opportunity to talk with an independent and experienced “sounding board” about issues, can help bring your attention to discovering with ease what your next empowered action could be.
Many of my clients are seeking support to clarify and focus on their life purpose, or to gain insight into their personal capacity, perhaps wanting to re-define their life choices and create a nourishing mindset, within which to reclaim their self-agency.
I also provide counselling to assist if you:
- have a medical diagnosis which is creating problems for you;
- have a medical condition which is terminal;
- are dealing with relationship problems;
- have difficulty coping with stress or conflict at work;
- want to find a solution to family problems;
- feel anxious and panicky;
- feel flat and depressed and lack motivation for the things you normally enjoy;
- are thinking of or planning suicide;
- have difficulty adjusting after a major change (like childbirth, separation, bereavement, illness);
- do not feel in control of your life;
- experienced a traumatic or life-threatening event that is still affecting you;
- have trouble sleeping because of worrying thoughts;
- find it hard to let go of past events;
- want a non-pharmacological (medicated) way to manage pain;
- are troubled by a life challenge and feeling stuck in a cycle of emotional pain.
I am able to provide perinatal non-directive counselling under Medicare.
I have a passion for empowering people to navigate through the often overwhelming trauma of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and take a compassionate approach, knowing that relational treatment is a key ingredient to effective psychological therapy and care. I am an accredited advanced practitioner of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) which is an effective treatment for PTSD (1).
In addition to EMDR, my therapeutic toolbox includes:
- mindfulness meditation;
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT);
- clinical hypnosis;
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT);
- Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM);
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT);
- Narrative Therapy;
- Solution-Focused Therapy;
- and Time-Limited therapy.
I am currently the only practitioner in Australia qualified in Inner Spirit Hypnotherapy©, having travelled to the University of Billings, Montana, specifically to train with Professor of Psychology and creator of the technique, Dr Dan Geiger.
NDIS Psychology Services
I have a particular interest in providing effective disability service for people who are NDIS plan and self-managed participants, which includes both much-needed mobile treatment options, and report writing to support your applications.
I am also dedicated to contributing to and supporting the resources available within our community and offer a clinical support / coaching / mentoring role for Support Cooordinators and others working within the NDIA/ NDIS arena. Perhaps you are working to develop your professional skill sets and insights around how to understand the complexities of Psychological and Psychiatric diagnoses with your NDIA clients. If you are wanting some focused support and guidance around what clinical diagnosis means for your client and how you can amplify the support you can offer, please feel welcome to call for a discussion.
Whatever your circumstances may be, I am here to listen, offer support, and perhaps some very practical, evidence-based (they work) strategies to assist you with transforming your feelings into clarity, your thoughts into focus, and your behaviours into the pathway leading to the desired change you are seeking.
Psychological treatment is a process of growth, healing and self-discovery. Courageously taking steps into therapy can bring up a range of emotional responses and thought processes, ranging from fears and apprehension to excitement and optimism, as you get down to dealing with matters you have wanted to for a while.
Whether you’re going through trauma, a life transition, depression, navigating a relationship ending or beginning; or the apparent never-ending difficulty of trying to manage a traumatic event or events: please take heart that there are many resources available to assist you with grace and ease through this time, however long you need.
