A panic attack is a physical sensation of fear which is a brief episode of anxiety. Panic attacks may occur unexpectedly as they are not usually due to any external threat. A panic attack can last from a few minutes to half an hour. However, the emotional and physical effects of a panic attack can last for a few hours. Panic attacks can be quite common, with a moderate portion of the population having experienced a panic attack sometime in their life. Signs of a panic attack can include shortness of breath, fast heart rate, muscle tension and trembling. Without treatment, prolonged and frequent panic attacks can be debilitating. Individuals will often feel they need to avoid a number of situations for fear of having an attack, which can have negative impacts on their relationships with others
