Hello! I am an endorsed health psychologist and clinical psychologist, with over 15 years of experience within the profession and masters degrees in both health and clinical psychology. This information, while important in choosing a psychologist, does not help you decide whether I am a good fit for you – and fit is important. In fact, research routinely shows “fit” to be a major contributor to the successfulness of psychological therapies. I’ve therefore provided the following information to help you decide if I am a good “fit” for you.
I am passionate about helping people find relief from their symptoms and live more fulfilling lives through making improvements in their physical and emotional health. I work from both the biopsychosocial and clinical psychology perspectives.
What does this mean in practical terms?
I believe that the term “health” incorporates physical health, emotional health and good social functioning (effective, supportive relationships and a sense of purpose or meaning in life). When any of these domains is out of kilter, the other two areas also tend to suffer. The clinical perspective is particularly useful in helping understand how your life experiences have contributed to you becoming the person you are today, and provide us a context in which to understand the challenges that you face.
In our work together you can expect that I will help you identify areas in your physical, emotional and social lives that can be enhanced to improve your overall wellbeing; or help you to address specific symptoms or problems in your life. If needed, we can look at how to move you forward without being derailed by things in your past.
As you can see, I like to work with the whole person. But don’t worry, you set the pace and we don’t need to do everything at once if working on all of these seems like it would be overwhelming.
My natural style is pretty direct, I am naturally optimistic and find the use of humour really useful in therapy. I have a strong commitment to creating an environment where my clients feel heard and genuinely supported in addressing their concerns.
So what sort of things can I help you with?
- Issues related to body image, weight or eating: Every day we are bombarded with messages telling us that we need to look a certain way or be a certain weight. For many people with eating disorders their primary struggle is not really with food or their size (although this tends to become a preoccupation). I assist people with exploring and address the underlying factors that drive their eating disorders as well as addressing the eating behaviours themselves.
- Coping with unusually demanding roles: Some jobs are more than just a nine to five, they are a lifestyle and require greater resilience and different skills to cope with the demands they place on both the worker and their families. I help people in these roles deal with the stressors of these jobs and lifestyles, and help them to address their challenges whilst maximising effectiveness in the workplace.
- People experiencing significant health issues: Chronic pain, chronic diseases, serious and terminal illnesses all impact our emotional wellbeing, and vice versa. As a health psychologist I have training in understanding how our physical and mental health interact, and psychological and behavioural factors that can help people cope and live more satisfying lives, despite injury and illness.
- People who need/want to make significant lifestyle changes to support their health: “Lifestyle” diseases are incredibly common and many people are asked by their doctors to change their diet, exercise or other health behaviours. Some people simply want to become healthier. But actually making sustainable lifestyle changes can be really hard, and many people “fall off the wagon”. I apply the principles of health behaviour change, developing motivation, and breaking bad habits, to support my clients in leading a healthier lifestyle.
- People who are coping with depression, anxiety, PTSD, alcohol abuse, sleep disorders: Mental health disorders are pervasive, but treatable. I use a number of evidence-based therapies to help people to feel better. We work to select the best strategies to help you cope with your symptoms.
- People who are coping with major life stressors: Modern life is stressful – and it tends to be more stressful during times of transition (eg divorce, becoming unemployed, retirement, moving) or when there are issues in the workplace. There is a range of techniques that you can learn to increase your coping in the moment, and improve your future resilience.
- Pregnancy and parenting: Despite all the books available, there really is no manual. Both pregnancy and adjusting to new parenting throws up a range of physical and emotional stressors. Society tends to give us messages that these processes are things that we should enjoy and cope well with, leaving people who don’t have this experience feeling isolated and alone. You don’t need to feel this way, let’s see what we can do to make things easier for you.
- Supervision: I am a trained supervisor and registered with AHPRA to provide supervision for 4+2 and 5+1 provisional psychologists, field supervise university placements and provide supervision for those completing the registrar program to become a health psychologist. I have previous experience as primary and secondary supervisor for interns and as field supervisor for psychology masters students. I very much enjoy the process of fostering the development of junior psychologists and other mental health professionals, so please contact me to discuss your needs.

I work with you to develop treatment plans that are evidence-based, matched to your goals for therapy, and which work with your strengths.
I use therapeutic techniques that help my clients to develop and maintain the knowledge, skills, and motivation that are needed for them to achieve lasting change. Doing so has the benefit of providing people with a framework and strategies that can then be used to tackle other challenging aspects of their lives. I primarily draw on:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT);
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT);
- Solution Focused (brief) Therapy (SFBT);
- Motivational Interviewing.
I also increasingly use Schema Therapy.
I am a senior psychologist. My background includes working as a psychologist for the Army, supporting Australian Defence Personnel here and overseas since 2000 (both full and part-time). In addition, I have experience in private practice and have completed training in both rehabilitation and psycho-oncology settings.
