Hi, I’m Leia and I’m a Clinical Psychologist. I am a Full Member of the Australian Psychological Society and I have a Clinical Psychology Endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia. My therapy philosophy is to create an open and trusting environment whereby clients feel safe and secure enough to begin their journey of self-discovery, and to work towards living a meaningful life by being the best version of themselves.
Child and Adolescent Psychology
I specialise in and am passionate about the area of clinical child and adolescent psychology, parent training and family therapy. I have extensive experience in working with children and adolescents over the past 8 years, with a range of mental health issues including:
- Anxiety (Generalised Anxiety, Panic Attacks etc.)
- Separation Anxiety
- Parenting Issues
- Family Issues
- Anger Management
- Behavioural Issues
- Communication Issues
- Social Skills Deficits
- Low Self-Esteem
- Grief & Loss
- Sleep Problems
- Academic Achievement
- Learning Difficulties
- Autism Spectrum Disorder Screening Test
As well as treatment, I also have experience in academic testing to address and understand learning difficulties or highlight areas where a child has excelled learning. Testing measures used include: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children; Wechsler Individual Achievement Test; Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence; and the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale. I also conduct Screening Tests for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In addition to treating children and adolescents, I have a keen interest in clinical adult psychology in the following areas:
- Panic Attacks
- Understanding and identifying the difference between Anxiety and Adult ADHD
- Relationship Difficulties
- Anger Management
- Post-Natal Depression
- Adjusting to Parenthood
- Rebuilding life after Trauma
I have training and experience in a variety of evidence based treatment approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Interpersonal Therapy (IPT); Solution Focused Therapy; Play Therapy; and Family Therapy. I have a passion for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Parent Training and Family Therapy. With regards to Parent Training I use the 123 Magic Behaviour Management Program by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Thomas Phelan. I find this to be very effective for parents in managing challenging behaviour for children aged 2-12. Parenting is definitely one of the most challenging jobs and equipping ourselves with effective tools throughout the journey, is an asset.
I can accept your referrals for Individual Psychological Therapy Sessions as provided by a Clinical Psychologist under Medicare’s Better Access Initiative. Clients that obtain a referral by means of a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan will be entitled to the set Medicare Rebate available under this initiative.
Supervision for Psychologists
I am currently undergoing STAP training through Griffith University with a planned completion date of August 2016. Upon completion of STAP training I will be able to provide supervision to provisionally registered psychologists either in the 4 + 2 or the 5 + 1 Pathways who are working towards their full registration. I will also be able to provide supervision to registered psychologists who are working towards their Clinical Accreditation with the Psychology Board of Australia. I will update this once training is complete. Please contact me for more details.
